30DISC – Day 0

Welcome to the first day of the 30 Day Information Security Challenge. Strictly speaking, it will be a 31 Day Challenge because of our inclusion of Day Zero, but I thought it worthwhile to give some background for users to understand who is taking part in this challenge.

So of course there’s me, a seasoned IT professional who has been programming computers since age 11 and with a deep professional interest in information security.

Then there’s Juan (not his real name) – he’s the CEO of a mid-sized company (approximately 60 employees). He has suffered from identity theft in the past and is keen to try to eliminate that threat from his future.

Next is Diana (not her real name) – she’s a business management consultant and, in her own words “a complete Luddite with computers”.

Lastly there is Priscilla (not her real name or gender) – she’s the CFO of company run by Juan and is basically going through this process because of a bet with Juan.

As you can see, none of the other Challengers have any great affinity for technology, and part of this challenge is to see how non-tech people get on with each day’s task.

Tomorrow, we’ll get into the actual challenge and start making our lives more digitally secure.

  6. Very well written and pertinent in today’s world. Will check out Proton, not that I am overly concerned with Google Gmail at this stage. Privacy and tracking is of concern though, so this could be a great tool. Hope you are well. Gf

    • Thanks for engaging Greg. When I opened up the Google repository of all the things that it knew about me that they were willing to divulge to me, I was pretty shocked. And I had taken active steps to minimise it! The unsettling part of it was that they were taking that information and selling it to advertisers to market stuff to me. I don’t like being a commodity.
